Ms. Rivera's Weekly Communication

March 22, 2024

Dear AITE Family,

Though it may not feel quite like it yet, we welcomed the first day of spring this week.  The remainder of the school year always feels like it flies by from now until the last day of school.  Next Thursday, March 28th marks the end of the 3rd quarter .  We will also run a special bell schedule on the 28th.   Students
will attend all 4 of their A-day classes, including the lunch waves, before heading to Rippowam’s gym for our annual March Madness student versus staff basketball game, which will start at 12:45 pm.  All students are required to attend this event, unless a
parent or guardian signs them out in the main office after classes end at 12:35 pm. Students will be dismissed from Rippowam at 2:05 pm.  School is closed on Friday in observance of Good Friday.  School will reopen on Monday, April 1, and it will be a B-day.

Kind regards,

Ms. Rivera

COVID Dashboard

We had one reported COVID case this week.

 Absence Documentation

Written documentation is required from a parent/guardian upon the date of the student’s return from an absence.  It can be sent in one of two ways:

1. by email to AITEAttendance@stamfordct.gov from the parent or

2. a written note from the parent sent directly to the office

The documentation must contain the date(s) of and the reason for the student's absence from school. Parents should contact their child's school counselor regarding the collection of homework assignments if their child will be out for several days.

Climate Survey

The annual SPS Climate Survey is now open.  This is an opportunity to share feedback about your child(ren)’s school(s). The family survey will be available in English, Spanish, Haitian-Creole and Ukrainian. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, April 3.  The link to the survey will be shared next week. This information is posted to the home page of our web site as well.  Thank you in advance for sharing your feeback!

CIEE Update – Good News

Students who did not apply for a scholarship can continue to apply to any of CIEE’s programs on the High School Summer Abroad Programs through April.  Do not miss out on this tremendous opportunity to travel abroad.

Course Selection for 2024-2025

The course selection process began this week.  Students should only select 7 courses based on the temporary 7-period schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. Please make sure that your child reads the instructions in Power School before selecting courses.  We also recommend that you look at what courses they select before they submit them in Power School to make sure they meet the prerequisites of the courses (if there are any) and to make sure they are selecting the courses they need for graduation.  Here is the link to the 2024-2025 Program of Studies: AITE.  Additionally, students should make appointments to meet with their school counselors or teachers, before they select their courses, if they have any questions.  Students will have until Friday, March 29 to submit their course selection in Power School.  Students can make changes in the portal at any time up through the deadline.

*Please note that not all courses that are available for students to select in Power School or in our Program of Studies will run next year.  Courses will be cancelled due to low enrollment.  Students will be asked to select second and third choices in the event that their first choice is cancelled or does not fit in their schedule.

**This process is intended to provide us with the number of students who have requested certain courses, so we can make decisions, like the number of sections we are able to run.

If your children will be entering grade 9 in the fall and currently attend one of the SPS middle schools, the middle school counselors will select the courses for them in Power School.  Please contact your child’s middle school counselor if you have any questions.

Early Dismissal – Wednesday, March 27

Students will be dismissed at 11:45 am on Wednesday, March 27.  It is a Professional Development for staff, which will start at 12:20 pm in the Cyber Café.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year

AITE science teacher, Danielle Weber, who in addition to receiving a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Outstanding Teacher of the Year award (only 79 teachers across the US were selected) was selected as PTLW’s National Teacher of the Year for the Biomedical Program.  This is a very competitive and prestigious award and we are very proud of all that she has done to make AITE’s program exceptional.

$50,000 Raised by Students this Past School Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

AITE students Ava Lesser and Nora Amsellem successfully raised over $50,000 this past school year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Their initial goal was to raise an ambitious $35,000; however, by the time their fundraising campaign concluded, they well surpassed their goal, raising a total of $53,274 from an estimated 750 different donors.

Because Ava and Nora surpassed the $50,000 mark, they have been rewarded with a research grant and were recognized as one of the top 8 teams in the Fairfield/Westchester area.  They will have the opportunity to direct the funds they raised towards a specific research initiative within LLS and have been asked to share their materials with the National Team to be used in their nationwide efforts to raise money and awareness.

AITE student, Arnav Gover, won first-place in the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) World Series of Innovation, Saint-Gobain Sustainable Cities Challenge.  The World Series of Innovation is an annual innovation challenge series focused on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). His project, Cardbio, focuses on the creation of an environmentally friendly composite material for sustainability and commercial use. It has been awarded the top entry in the Saint-Gobain Sustainable Cities Challenge, which requested innovative ideas to achieve progress on one of the UN Global Goals #11, Sustainable Cities and Communities. Thousands of young entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world entered the competition in the fall, and the top ten entries in each challenge bracket moved on to the final round of judging earlier this month. The winners were announced on March 31. Arnav has won $1,500 and he will have the ability to work with St. Gobain engineers to turn his concept into a reality.  Arnav and other students at AITE worked on submitting solutions to the challenges in Entrepreneurship class with teachers Mr. Schrag and Ms. Zanga.
