The study of World Language develops an awareness of other people's views, an understanding of their unique ways of life and a recognition and respect for their diversity and contributions to the world at large. Linguistic proficiency combined with cultural knowledge will enable students to interact in a variety of real-life situations. Effective communication based on knowledge of language and cultures will be a key to success and prosperity. This is the mission of the Stamford Public Schools World Language Program.
We believe that all students, given the proper learning environment, can learn and experience success in a foreign language. The primary goal of our modern language program is communicative proficiency. Our curriculum is aligned to the Connecticut World Language frameworks, ACTFL proficiency standards and Connecticut’s Common Core of Learning. Our curriculum aims to expand the educational experience of students by connecting with other disciplines through the study of geography, history, literature, art and music in the target language. World language education develops critical-thinking skills, trains the mind in orderly thinking, and encourages students to develop a greater understanding of their own language.
Currently, our World Language Program is in the process of redefining our curriculum. In the 2011- 2012 school year, a four year curriculum project was begun to align levels I and II in French and Spanish at the secondary level. This plan began during the 2011- 2012 school year, and will be completed during the 2014- 2015 school year.
