Message from Superintendent Lucero
Dear Families and Staff,
In recognition of the Thanksgiving Holiday, I want to take a moment and sincerely thank the staff, teachers, administrators, families and students. It has been a very trying 19 months of navigating through a global health pandemic. In Stamford, we have made every effort to thrive instead of merely surviving and for that, I say “Thank You”!
Following another inappropriate challenge posted on TikTok, which encourages students to create videos depicting violence and vaping, we are once again asking for your help by speaking to your children about the appropriate use of social media. This TikTok challenge is inappropriate and participation in the making or posting of these videos is a violation of school and district behavior policies. Please make sure that you are monitoring your child’s use of social media and ensure that they understand the implications of participating in these videos. While social media is a fun tool that our students enjoy, we must help them understand that everything they appear in or post becomes part of their digital footprint. Please know that our school and central office staff is available to any student or parent who needs to report any issue or concern. You also may want to visit Common Sense Media, an independent, non-profit organization that provides reviews on entertainment and technology for schools and families that has resources to assist parents with understanding TikTok. Please see the links below on their website for additional information: Parents Ultimate Guide to TikTok and Help Kids Navigate Viral Social Media Stunts.
As we look towards the future, we would like to officially announce that we will be engaging the community in an opportunity to review and reflect on our Strategic Plan. Staff, community members, and parent representatives originally developed this plan in 2017. As we begin the new calendar year, we will take time to look back and develop a plan for moving forward with a new five-year strategic plan.
Please remember to join us at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, Thursday, November 25, at Stamford High’s Boyle Stadium for the annual Westhill High vs. Stamford High Intracity Football game. It is a great way to start your Thanksgiving holiday.
Finally, I want to take a moment and sincerely THANK the Honorable Mayor Martin for his leadership over the past 8 years, but especially over the last 19 months as he guided our City through these unprecedented times. Mayor Martin’s willingness to track the COVID-19 data, meet with city leaders and health professionals regularly, allocate health and safety staff and resources to the Stamford Public Schools is nothing short of noteworthy and I must say deeply appreciated. Not many cities our size were able to return and remain in school and much of the credit for this monumental feat lies at the Mayor’s office door. On behalf of the students, families and staff in Stamford I send a “heartfelt and hearty Thank You”!
A word of wisdom to us all - please take a few moments to rest, relax, and spend this much missed time with family and friends.
Stay Safe and Healthy!
Dr. Tamu Lucero
