Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that Scofield Magnet Middle School Eighth Grader Aryan Pandalai was recently named to the National American Mathematics Competition (AMC 8) Honor Roll. In November 2019, a team of Scofield eighth graders participated in the 2019 Mathematics Association of America’s AMC 8. Pandalai earned a score among the top 5% nationally to reach Honor Roll designation. The Scofield Math Team also earned School Merit Roll status for having a combined score of between 50 and 65 points for its top-three students: Pandalai, Malek Zanbrakji and Deep Banarjee.
According to the organization, the mission of the MAA's American Mathematics Competitions is to increase interest in mathematics and to develop problem-solving through a fun competition. It offers a chance to challenge students with interesting mathematical questions aligned with curriculum standards at all levels of difficulty. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Under strict organization guidelines, students take the exam and submit competition booklets for scoring by the organization.
This year, more than 300,000 students participated from over 6,000 schools in the country.
The Mathematical Association of America (MMA) is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts. We accelerate the understanding of our world through mathematics because mathematics drives society and shapes our lives.
