World Languages
“Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are linguistically and culturally equipped to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language, modern or classical. Children who come to school from non-English backgrounds should also have opportunities to develop further proficiencies in their first language.” - Statement of Philosophy from The American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language
The study of World Language develops an awareness of other people's views, an understanding of their unique ways of life and a recognition and respect for their diversity and contributions to the world at large. Linguistic proficiency combined with cultural knowledge will enable students to interact in a variety of real-life situations. Effective communication based on knowledge of language and cultures will be a key to success and prosperity. This is the mission of the Stamford Public Schools World Language Program.
We believe that all students, given the proper learning environment, can learn and experience success in a foreign language. The primary goal of our modern language program is communicative proficiency. Our curriculum is aligned to the Connecticut World Language frameworks, ACTFL proficiency standards and Connecticut’s Common Core of Learning. Our curriculum aims to expand the educational experience of students by connecting with other disciplines through the study of geography, history, literature, art and music in the target language. World language education develops critical-thinking skills, trains the mind in orderly thinking, and encourages students to develop a greater understanding of their own language.
