AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is an in-school academic support program for academically average students in grades 5-12 that prepares them for college eligibility and success. AVID has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students and in assisting school districts in closing the achievement gap.
The AVID program is currently in five middle schools and three high schools in the Stamford Public Schools. The AVID program is targeted to students in the academic middle—B, C, and even D students—who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to apply themselves and work hard. These are students who are able to complete rigorous curriculum, with academic and study skills support, but are not reaching their potential. They are typically the first in their families to attend college and many are from low-income or minority families.
