The Implementation of Social Emotional Learning at School

Making SEL a part of the school culture, across all classrooms and throughout the day is a big part of school wide efforts to improve student well-being. The core competencies of SEL can be taught in many ways and across settings. Explicit instruction can be used to outline learning goals for SEL and specific activities that explain the SEL skills to students. In addition, opportunities can be provided to practice these skills in a class or content area and skills can be reinforced through modeling, “teachable moments”, and classroom structures that promote use of SEL competencies. Different approaches can be used in schools including evidenced based approaches such as Responsive Classroom, Open Circle, and RULER.
