Family and medical leave act FMLA
What is the FMLA? The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 is a federal law that entitles employees to job-protected unpaid leave from work for up to 12 weeks in any 12 month period for the following reasons:
- The care of a child after birth or adoption or placement of a child
- The serious health condition of the employee
- The serious health condition of a child, spouse, domestic partner, or parent
FMLA also includes a special leave entitlement that permits eligible employees to take up to 26 weeks of leave to care for a covered servicemember during a single 12-month period.
