Baseball/ Softball Field (updated 9/26/23)
Through its competitive bid process, the City of Stamford has awarded a contract to DeRosa Sports, for the renovation to athletic fields at Stamford High School. DeRosa Sports is a premier builder of field facilities serving the tristate area and members of the American Sports Builders Association.
Last school year, the Mayor and City officials visited with the SGC on site at the athletic fields to discuss this project. At the time we were unable to commit to constructing more than the baseball field based on the $3M in state grant funding received for the project. We’re excited to share that based on the bids received – the project scope will now include both the baseball and softball fields!
The project includes a new a synthetic turf softball field and a synthetic turf overlapped baseball and multipurpose field. The key funding sources for the work comes from two State grants - CT DEEP and CT DECD. The outcome of this project will allow SHS student athletes currently using alternate locations for sports to remain on campus for after school activities. Additional benefits include improved safety precautions, drainage upgrades, and providing for more accessible walkways across the athletic campus.
The field design was completed in August 2023 by SLR, a leader in outdoor sports design. The project is scheduled to commence in October 2023 and will be completed in the Spring/Summer 2024.
Upper Soccer Field (updated 9/26/23)
The Mayor’s Office is aware of the concerns raised by the Athletic Director and parents regarding the condition of the upper soccer field. I know the school community received an update from Stamford Public Schools regarding steps that have been taken by the Stamford Public Schools Facilities team. The City is working with SPS to secure a third-party professional consultation to review the condition and composition of the Upper Soccer Field. The City’s goal is to act on professional recommendations that can be implemented for long - term solutions that will complement the continued maintenance by the SPS Facilities team.
Additionally, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Stamford Public Schools and Stamford High School Athletic Director, are working to identify city field space for any games needed in the meantime.
