Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - October 20, 2023

Dear Staff and Families,

Café con la Super, our monthly Spanish language community meeting, is this Monday, October 23 at 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. This month, Chief Academic Officer Amy Beldotti will share information about the many specialized programs of study available to students entering high school. Both Café con la Super sessions are in-person at the Stamford Government Center.  Please note, the previously announced Café con la Super event with Mayor Simmons has been rescheduled for November.

Roxbury School Visit

I had the pleasure of visiting Roxbury last week for the HOTS (Higher Order Thinking School) Echo Day.  Students and staff had the opportunity to choose learning activities that incorporated cheer, dance, soccer, exercise, and karate, as well as culminating CKLA nursery rhyme activities for Kindergarten students.  Other engaging activities include a school newspaper, art, student council, a library makeover, and stock market.

Roxbury has done a wonderful job incorporating the HOTS program into their school community.  Thank you to Roxbury administrators, teachers and staff for engaging and inspiring your students through this impressive program!

AgriScience Fall Festival

The Stamford AgriScience Fall Festival is tomorrow – Saturday, October 21 – from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the AgriScience Building at Westhill High School.  This event is open to the community.  There will be food for sale, zombie tours, student vendors, and mums for sale!  The AgriScience program is one of the specialized high school programs of study available to SPS students.  Please stop by to support our AgriScience students and to learn more about this wonderful program.

Long Term Facilities Update

Please join us on Tuesday, October 24 at 8:30 a.m. via zoom for a Community Conversation about the Long Term Facilities Plan.  During this meeting, Dr. Lori Rhodes, Associate Superintendent for Access and Opportunity, will share a proposal to accelerate the establishment of a middle school program at Westover Magnet Elementary School and realign the middle school feeder pattern for students at Hart, Roxbury, Stillmeadow and Westover.  Another session will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.

Magnet School Information Sessions

Thank you to everyone who attended Magnet School Information Sessions at Hart, Strawberry Hill, Rogers and Westover this week.  Toquam Elementary will host in-person information sessions on Wednesday, October 25 at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  The Magnet School Lottery application is available online.   Please visit our website for more information.

Realtor Visit to Westover Magnet School

Thank you to Westover administrators, teachers, and staff for hosting this month’s “Tour a School” program for the Stamford Board of Realtors.   Tour participants enjoyed learning about the African drumming and steel drum residency and the wonder dance program that are part of Westover’s Arts and Problem Solving theme.

Reimagining Media Centers Focus Group

Earlier this year, we hosted staff and community conversations about the future of our media centers. As a result of those conversations, we created a focus group to develop recommendations for how our media centers can be reimagined to ensure they once again become vibrant and engaging places to learn, collaborate, and create.  If you would like to join the Media Center focus group, please reach out to Kathleen Steinberg of our Public Affairs Office.

We’re Hiring

Community members are often surprised to hear just how many employment and career opportunities exist within Stamford Public Schools. In fact, individuals who have a bachelor’s degree may qualify for one of the many alternative routes to teaching.  If you are interested in learning more, please click here to contact a member of our Human Resources team.

Stay Safe and Healthy!
