Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Dr. Lucero in front of a white board.

Dear Staff and Families,

Thank you again to all of the administrators and staff that invited Veterans to your school communities to speak with students and staff. I truly appreciate the care that is taken each year to remember our local heroes.

Last week I had the honor of meeting and listening to Richard “Cookie” Thomas.  Cookie served in the Vietnam War and was deployed twice.  He is a local treasure with a voice that lights up the room.

During the visit to Davenport, the fourth grade students, with the support of the amazing music teachers, surprised Cookie by singing the national anthem.

Thank you to Cookie and all of the Veterans that joined Stamford Public Schools this week.

Also, thank you to the Springdale school community for again planting flags on their front lawn.  This visual tribute created to honor our Veterans is breathtaking each year.

Welcome and Thank You to the Board of Education (BOE)

I want to take a moment to welcome the newly elected BOE members: Lisa Butler, Michael Hyman, and Versha Munshi-South.  We look forward to working with each of you as a member of the Board of Education.

I also want to take a moment and thank Jennienne Burke, Dan Dauplaise and Nic Tarzia for their service to the Board of Education and the Stamford Public Schools.

Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program (CAAP)

There is exciting and potentially life-changing news for our SPS students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in our state.  According to the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE), in a “June 2021 special session, the Connecticut legislature passed Public Act 21-2, An Act Concerning Provisions Related to Revenue and Other Items to Implement the State Budget for the Biennium Ending June 30, 2023.  Sections 257 and 258 set requirements for The Board of Regents for Higher Education (BOR) to establish the Connecticut Automatic Admission Program (CAAP) for eligible Connecticut high school students to be automatically admitted to Connecticut’s State Universities: Central Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Southern Connecticut State University, and Western Connecticut State University.  The program is also open to other Connecticut post-secondary institutions”.

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2023, which will serve as the first official class of students eligible for CAAP.

For more information, including an informative webinar visit the CT portal or the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU) webpage.
