Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - May 31, 2024

Dear Staff and Families,

The school year is quickly coming to an end, which means it’s time to check around your home for books/textbooks, chrome books, power cords, musical instruments, sports equipment, and other items that must be returned to school.  Items should be returned in good condition and working order to avoid fees for lost or damaged items.  Please take time now to locate and return any school property.  Waiting until the last day of school creates extra work for our staff and may result in you being charged a missing items fee.

HVAC Indoor Air Quality Grants

Stamford Public Schools was recently awarded $6.79M in state reimbursements for HVAC projects at Newfield and Rippowam that are part of the Long-Term Facilities Plan.  This is the second round of funding awarded through Connecticut’s HVAC Indoor Air Quality Grants Program.  Last year, SPS received $3M in reimbursements through this program.

End of Year School Safety

The last two weeks of the school year include plenty of family events on our school campuses. Please help us maintain a safe and secure school environment by following all safety protocols when visiting your child’s school.  Be sure to check in and out with office staff and wear your visitors badge at all times.  Have fun and stay safe.

Seal of Biliteracy

Congratulations to our 274 high school students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy this year.  To earn this designation, students must demonstrate that they can read, write, speak, and understand a second world language in addition to English.  Our students achieved the Seal of Biliteracy in 22 different languages.

Shout Out – Random Act of Kindness

Last week I happened upon a random act of kindness when a Stamford Police Officer was returning a lost wallet to a Cloonan employee.  Our staff member was in the process of canceling her credit cards when she received word that the wallet had been recovered. Thank you to the SPD for recovering the wallet and delivering it to the owner. These random acts of kindness occur every day in our schools and are a positive reflection on our community.

SPS Quarterly

The Spring 2024 SPS Quarterly is now available.  The Quarterly is published in four languages and was created to keep the community-at-large informed about what’s happening in Stamford Public Schools.

AITE Named Project Lead the Way Distinguished School

Congratulations to AITE which was named a 2023-24 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for providing students with transformative learning experiences through PLTW Computer Science, Biomedical Science, and Engineering.  AITE is just one of seven schools in Connecticut to be recognized as a PLTW Distinguished School.

APPLES 10-Year Anniversary Celebration

APPLES is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with an event on Monday, June 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The suggested donation is $25 per family and all proceeds will help fund new outdoor playground equipment for our youngest learners.  We encourage current and former APPLES families and staff to join us in celebrating this inclusive preschool community.  Click here for the invite and to RSVP.

Celebrating Stamford’s Citizen of the Year

I had the pleasure of spending Wednesday evening at an event honoring the 2024 Stamford Citizen of the Year, Police Sgt. Adriana Molina, veterans from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, and the 2024 JWV Community Scholarship Program recipients from our three high schools.  It was a wonderful evening celebrating those who make our community better.  Please join me in congratulating all of the honorees.

Finally, the community is invited to stop by Westhill High School tomorrow from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. for Haitian Heritage Community Day, where you can savor the flavors of Haitian cuisine, explore offerings from local vendors, and learn about Haitian culture.  All events will be in the Westhill courtyard and auditorium.

Stay Safe and Healthy!

Dr. Tamu Lucero
