Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - May 17, 2024

Dear Staff and Families,

The Multilingual Learner Program will be the topic of the next Café con la Super on Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the 4th Floor Cafeteria of the Government Center.  Families with questions about services for English Learners, or any other aspects of the proposed FY25 budget reallocation, should plan to attend this meeting.  Café con la Super is presented in Spanish with translation in English available at every meeting.  To register to attend, please click here

If you missed our budget reallocation presentation to the BOE on May 7, you can view the presentation here and watch a recording of the meeting here.

2024-2025 Paraeducator of the Year

Congratulations to Stark Elementary’s Maritza Nunez, who earlier this week was named the SPS 2024-2025 Paraeducator of the Year.  Maritza has supported our students as a paraeducator for nearly 23 years and is also the proud parent of SPS graduates.  Maritza, who has been described as “a shining example of someone who truly embodies student-centered teaching and learning,” will be recognized at an event next week alongside the 1st and 2nd Place Runners Up:

  • 1st Place Runner Up – Lauren Hunt, Turn of River Middle School
  • 2nd Place Runner Up – Joan Scalise, Davenport Ridge Elementary School

Congratulations to Maritza, Lauren, Joan and all of this year’s nominees!  Thank you for all you do to support our students.

Kindergarten Registration

Thank you to our Office of Family and Community Engagement for hosting a Kindergarten Registration Event last week at the Ferguson Library.  The OFCE staff and several school-based Parent Facilitators worked in collaboration with some of our community partners to ensure our youngest learners are registered and ready to start kindergarten in August.

Remember, all Stamford children who turn five years old on or before September 1, 2024, are eligible to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Click here for more information or email ofce@stamfordct.gov with questions.

Administrative Appointments

One of the great things about a large district like Stamford Public Schools is that we can offer building leaders many opportunities to learn, grow, and enhance their skills without leaving our community.  This week, we announced a number of administrative appointments that will take effect on July 1.  Click here to read about these changes and to learn more about some of our accomplished principals and assistant principals.

Girl Scout Troop Recognition

Thank you to the Girl Scouts for inviting me to speak at the Silver and Gold Awards Ceremony last Saturday along with Stamford Citizen of the Year, Sgt. Adriana Molina of the Stamford Police Department, and Ferguson Library CEO Alice Knapp.  Congratulations to the honorees who shared their amazing projects that are bringing value to the Stamford and Bridgeport communities.

Stamford Realtors Visit

On Wednesday, I welcomed a group of Stamford Realtors to Turn of River (TOR) Middle School for our monthly tour.  TOR Principal Sherri Prendergast shared information about our middle school program including the new middle school model that will be implemented throughout the district for the 2024-25 school year.

I want to thank all the Realtors who joined our monthly school tours this year.  Enjoy the summer and we will see you in September.

Middle School Musicals This Weekend

If you have time this weekend, please consider supporting our student actors and actresses at Dolan and Turn of River (TOR) as they present Finding Nemo, Jr., and Grease: School Edition, respectively.  For showtimes and ticket information, click here for Finding Nemo, Jr. at Dolan and here for Grease: School Edition at TOR.

Filling in the Blanks Food Pantry

Finally, the Filling in the Blanks Mobile Food Pantry returns to Stamford tomorrow - Saturday, May 18 - from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.  The food pantry will be set up in the Cloonan Middle School rear parking lot.  If you or someone you know could benefit from this service, please be sure to stop by on Saturday morning.  If you are interested in learning more about this amazing organization or are interested in volunteering, please click here.

Stay Safe and Healthy!
