Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - March 3, 2023

Dear Staff and Families,

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the CT Black & Puerto Rican Caucus Book Giveaway at Roxbury Elementary School.  The Black & Puerto Rican Caucus recently received funding from the CT Legislature to provide every K-3 classroom in Stamford Public Schools with books highlighting Black and Latino stories.  Thank you to Representative Hubert Delany, Senator Patricia Billie Miller, and the members of the Stamford Delegation who secured funding for this initiative. Thanks, also, to the Board of Education members who joined me at Roxbury for a wonderful event celebrating literacy and diversity.

Rescheduled – Help Us Reimagine Our Media Centers

Please update your calendar and join us on Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. to share your ideas as we discuss the future of our media centers. This Community Conversation is part of a yearlong series in which families, staff, and the community can share their ideas and feedback with the Superintendent. Thank you to Stamford Cradle to Career for co-hosting the event.  Please plan to join us via zoom.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences on March 22, 23, and 24.  Parent Teacher Conferences are an important opportunity for families to meet one-on-one with their child’s teachers to hear about their academic progress.  Stay tuned for more information from your child’s building principal and classroom teachers.

Attendance Calls Home for Absences of Students in K-8

Beginning Monday, March 6, if your K-8 child is absent from school, you will get a robocall notifying you of the absence sometime between 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  As a reminder, all SPS communications from the district and buildings are driven by the contact information that is listed within PowerSchool. Please be sure that the emails and phone numbers listed for your child are up-to-date. You can make changes by signing into your Parent Portal on an internet browser and going to Forms. Click on Contacts and update your information there. If you have questions or need assistance with your Parent Portal account, please contact your school.

Thank You SPEF and RIF for 33,000 Books!

Thanks to a generous federal grant received through the collaborative efforts of the Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) and Reading is Fundamental (RIF), all Stamford Public Schools students in grades K-8 will receive three new books for their home libraries as part of the March Into Reading with Books Across Stamford initiative.  That is 33,000 new books for Stamford Students!  Literacy specialists in each school received access to the Reading is Fundamental Bookstore, where they selected books they knew their students would love.  Be sure to ask your child about their new books.

Thanks, also, to the staff and students at Newfield Elementary School who hosted Mayor Caroline Simmons, Senator Richard Blumenthal, and representatives from SPEF, Stamford Public Schools and the Ferguson Library earlier today to celebrate this incredible donation from SPEF and RIF.

Community Conversation about Proposed Southside K-8 School

K.T. Murphy and Toquam families are invited to join us on Monday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. for a Community Conversation about the proposed new K-4 and 5-8 schools that will serve families in the Lockwood Avenue, Cove and Shippan neighborhoods.  Families can attend this event in person at K.T. Murphy or via zoom.  Click here to view the flyer.

Back to School

I just want to take a moment to recognize and thank the Board of Finance, Board of Representatives, and Board of Education members who participated in our Back to School program sponsored by Stamford Public Schools and the Stamford Education Association. We appreciated our elected officials taking time out of their busy schedules to visit our schools. I know that the staff and students appreciated meeting with our elected officials and sharing some of the wonderful things their schools have to offer.  We look forward to continuing these opportunities annually!

Stay Safe and Healthy!
