Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - March 22, 2024

Dear Staff and Families,

Congratulations to Patrice Moore, Grade 3 teacher, at Hart Magnet Elementary School, who was named the Stamford Public Education Foundation’s (SPEF) 2024 Educator Award Winner last night at the Excellence in Education Awards.  Patrice was selected from among 22 SPS educators who were nominated  by the Parent-Teacher Organizations at each elementary, middle, and high school.

On behalf of everyone at Stamford Public Schools, I’d like to thank SPEF and the parent leaders at our schools for recognizing and celebrating our talented and dedicatedthe members educators.

Budget Update

Last night, Ryan Fealey and I presented the Board of Education’s FY25 proposed budget to the Board of Finance (BOF). This was a crucial meeting, as the Board of Finance can recommend to either approve the budget as submitted or make cuts. The members of the BOF asked a lot of questions and had strong opinions about the proposed budget.  Thank you to everyone who watched this important meeting.

The next step in the budget process is the BOF/BOR Fiscal Committee Public Hearing on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m. via zoom. This is your opportunity to speak directly to city board members about the budget.

If you would like to sign up to speak and share your thoughts about the budget, send an email to tdonoghue@stamfordct.gov OR bdreps@stamfordct.gov. Please note that live translation will be available.

Café Con La Super

Due to a scheduling conflict, the March 2024 Café Con La Super meeting has been canceled. The next meeting is Monday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th Floor of the Government Center.  Our guest speaker will be Erika Hayes, Director of the School and State Funding Project.  April’s topic is the ELL Bill of Rights.

Climate Survey

The Stamford Public Schools School Climate Survey is open!  The SPS School Climate Survey measures the degree to which families, students and staff feel welcome, safe, and valued at their school. This is important because a positive school climate positively impacts teaching and learning.

The family survey is available in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Ukrainian. Please complete a separate survey for each child you have in Stamford Public Schools.

The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, April 3.

Kindergarten Orientation and Play & Learn Nights

Just a reminder that our Kindergarten Orientation and Play & Learn Nights begin next week.  These events are for children who are entering kindergarten in Fall 2024 and their parents. Attendees will get to see their child’s school, play fun learning games, meet kindergarten teachers and other staff, and learn how to get ready for kindergarten.  View the fliers in English and Spanish to see the dates and times for each school.

Veterans Day and Columbus Day Curriculum Meetings

The district is in the process of developing curriculum for Columbus Day and Veterans Day. The Connecticut State General Statute requires that “if a school session is held on a federal holiday, the board shall require each school to hold a suitable nonsectarian educational program in observance of such holiday.”

If you are interested in joining any of the Columbus Day or Veterans Day committee meetings listed below, please place your request here.
