Weekly Message from the Superintendent
Dear Staff and Families,
Last week the Stamford Garden Club announced the winners of the 10th annual Lettuce Challenge. Elementary students across the City of Stamford, with the support of their teachers and a few tips from the Stamford Garden Club, grew lettuce this spring. The students succeeded in growing beautiful lettuce that looked similar to what you would find in a grocery store. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in this hands-on project, especially students from Davenport and Rogers who were awarded the Lettuce Challenge Best in Show. As I shared during the celebration, the Lettuce Challenge supports our K-5 curriculum and I hope all SPS second graders get to participate in this fun challenge in the future.
A quick reminder to mark your calendar and join us for the Teaching and Learning workshop scheduled for Tuesday, June 6. Alec Iogman will share the 3-year technology plan. Thank you in advance to the members of the committee who helped to create this amazing plan. In addition to the technology presentation, Claudia Berlage will share information about current and future pathway opportunities focused on career connected learning.
Café con la Super – Spanish Language Community Conversation Series
I am excited to announce that we are hosting our first Spanish Language Community Conversation on Monday, June 5 at 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center. These sessions will have a brief presentation followed by a question-and-answer period. Translation will be available. Please register here if you are planning to attend.
Reminder: Annual Physicals Required for Grades K, 6, and 9
Students entering kindergarten, 6th and 9th grades in the Fall of 2023 are required to have a recent annual physical on file with Stamford Public Schools. We recommend that you schedule your child’s physical around their birthday. It can be difficult to get an appointment right before school begins in August.
Please bring this form with you to your appointment. Your doctor will need to fill it out for the school nurse.
If your child does not have a healthcare provider they see regularly, click here for a list of providers in Stamford that offer school entry physicals.
Kindergarten Registration
If you know a family with children who lives in Stamford and the child will turn five years old on or before January 1, 2024, they are eligible to begin kindergarten in August. Please encourage anyone with a child eligible for kindergarten to register as soon as possible. Early registration enables us to better manage enrollment and staffing for the upcoming year. Click here for more information or email ofce@stamfordct.gov with questions.
Summer School Information
We’re gearing up to offer the SPS Summer School Program, an invitation only program, which features academic support programs for students in K-8 and credit recovery for students in grades 9-12. Additional summer programs include the New Arrivals program for English Learners and the Extended School Year (ESY) program for qualifying students with disabilities.
Information sessions for summer school will be hosted by each summer school site so specific questions can be answered. The schedule is posted here.
If you need more information, please email BOESummerSchool@stamfordpublicschools.org
SPS Retirement and Year of Service Recognition
On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge SPS teachers and staff who are retiring at the end of the school year. It was a wonderful evening and we want to take another moment to thank our retirees for their dedicated service to Stamford Public Schools. You each made an impact.
We also recognized teachers, administrators, and staff who reached 25, 35 or 50+ years of service with the SPS. Please join me in celebrating these individuals for their extraordinary commitment to our schools.
Stay safe and healthy!
Dr. Tamu Lucero
Superintendent
