Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent's Weekly Message - August 9, 2024

Dear Staff and Families,

I want to take a moment to thank the curriculum committees of teachers and staff that have worked tirelessly this summer to continue to write and revise PreK-12 core and elective curricula. This complex work supports improved instruction and assessment across the school district.

Speaking of assessments, the English language arts, social studies, math, science, and world language curriculum committees are also developing common assessments for core courses. Some of these assessments will be the more traditional “midterms” and “finals” that used to be administered during midterms and finals weeks. As midterms and finals weeks resulted in too much lost instructional time, these new assessments will be embedded in the curriculum and administered during regular class time.

The Teaching & Learning Department will create an assessment matrix where administrators, teachers, staff, the BOE elected members and other interested stakeholders can see the types of assessments (cumulative test, lab report, formal paper, presentation, document based questions, etc.) designed for each course along with the window of time when the assessments will be administered.

School Registration Event Tomorrow at 10 am

The Office of Family and Community Engagement is hosting one more in-person school registration event tomorrow—Saturday, August 10—from 10 am to 2 pm at the Government Center. Toquam Assistant Principal Corine Matarasso will be our guest reader at 10:30 a.m. in the Government Center Lobby.

In-person registration assistance will be available in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole, with support for speakers of other world languages available via phone. Please bring documents proving your identity, Stamford residency, and your child’s date of birth.

PowerSchool Rollover to 2024-25

This week, our technology and data teams began the annual process of readying PowerSchool for the upcoming school year. When you log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal next week, you will see that your child’s page has been updated with their school assignment for the 2024-25 school year. Information including teacher assignments, schedules, and bus assignments will be added to PowerSchool during the week of August 19.

If you’re new to SPS and creating a PowerSchool account, our District Code is JQJK.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2024-2025 school year is coming to an end. If you know a family with children who live in Stamford and turn five years old on or before September 1, please encourage them to register as soon as possible. Click here for more information or email us with questions.

Reminder: Proof of Annual Physical

Families of currently enrolled students are required to provide an updated State of CT Health Assessment & Immunization Record showing proof of a recent physical examination when they enter middle school (grade 6) and high school (grade 9).  Students who do not provide these forms during 6th and 9th grades will not be permitted to enter 7th grade and 10th grade in Fall 2025.

If your child does not have a healthcare provider they see regularly, click here for a list of local providers that offer physicals and immunizations.

Grade 9 Orientation

Last week, we misstated the timeframe for ninth grade orientation at AITE, Stamford High School, and Westhill High School.  Ninth grade orientation is from 7:25 to 11:45 am on Tuesday, August 27. Bus transportation will be provided. The high school principals will provide detailed information about orientation to all incoming freshmen later this month.
