Weekly Message from the Superintendent
Dear Staff and Families,
I want to take a moment to celebrate our 2024 summer graduates. Congratulations! Thanks to our amazing summer school teachers, counselors, social workers, administrators, and staff —as well as supportive family members—we have 78 additional students from AITE, Stamford High School, and Westhill High School that successfully met the graduation requirements.
I also want to thank the elementary and middle school students and families that attended summer school and worked hard on reading and math lessons. We appreciate our amazing staff and teachers who created an engaging learning environment for these students.
Finally, thank you again to all of our community-based organizations that provided amazing opportunities for students and their families throughout the summer months. It always does my heart well to see how we come together every summer to care for and support students. Stamford is undoubtedly an amazing place to live and raise a family.
Bus Transportation
Approximately 12,000 SPS students qualify for bus transportation, requiring more than 600 trips to/from our 22 schools every school day. Bus routes are created each year using current enrollment data and the home addresses in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
To ensure accurate bus routes for the first day of school, we are setting the following deadlines for guaranteed bus routes on the first day of school:
- If you recently moved and your address is incorrect in PowerSchool, please contact your child’s 2023-24 school by Wednesday, August 7 to update your address. (Please note, you will need to provide proof of your new address.)
- If you have a student starting kindergarten or transferring into SPS from outside the district, please register for school by Wednesday, August 14.
Failure to request an address change by Wednesday, August 7 or to register new students by Wednesday, August 14 may result in your child not having a bus assignment for the first day of school. Bus assignments will be posted in PowerSchool
Registration Event - Saturday, August 10
Speaking of registration, the Office of Family and Community engagement is hosting one more in-person registration event on Saturday, August 10 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Government Center.
In-person registration assistance will be available in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole, with support for speakers of other world languages available via phone. Please bring documents proving your identity, Stamford residency, and your child’s date of birth.
Orientation for Grades K, 6, and 9
Stamford Public School will host orientation for students entering kindergarten, sixth, and ninth grades on Tuesday, August 27. Orientation will begin at each school’s regular start time and last two hours. Bus transportation will be provided. Parents of kindergarten students may ride the bus with their child. Detailed information about orientation will be provided by your school principal later this month.
Spotlight on BOE Policy - Student Behavior & Discipline
The Stamford Board of Education is responsible for creating the policies that govern Stamford Public Schools. Every policy is available to view on our website in the 11 most requested languages in PowerSchool. Parents, students, administrators, teachers, and staff should take time to familiarize themselves with the policies and regulations relevant to them. For instance, student behavior and discipline are addressed in BOE Policy 5131 & 5131R. I urge parents to review this policy and share pertinent information with their children. School principals will be sharing expectations for student behavior and consequences for misconduct with their students during the first week of school.
Stay Safe and Healthy!
Dr. Tamu Lucero
