Key Accomplishments 2019-2022

Since the implementation of the 2017 Strategic Plan, SPS has taken a progressive approach to meeting the needs of our diverse community. Key Milestones of note over the past five years include:

Adoption of Scientific Research Based interventions across the district
Expansion of our International Baccalaureate Programs from elementary through graduation, including offering the IB diploma program since 2020
Implementation of restorative practices disciplinary policies
Expansion of our school counseling framework in both middle and high school
Investment of significant resources to expand our special education programs

Recent Highlights and Milestones

Enhanced Teaching and Learning Practice

A major initiative of the 2017 Strategic plan was the adoption of a standardized 90 minute literacy block and associated assessments across all Stamford elementary schools. Through our partnership with Literacy How, we have embedded coaching and resources into all general education classrooms. In 2021, we saw 14% gains in our DIBLES scores for students in program pilot classrooms in grade K through 2.

APPLES Early Childhood center supports early childhood preschool programs in the city of Stamford with professional development opportunities and opportunities to collaborate with pre-school teachers and the Stamford Public Schools Kindergarten staff
Each elementary school in Stamford has adopted a theme or areas of focus. From higher order thinking to Responsive Classroom Leadership Schools, our elementary communities use evidence-based approaches to increase student engagement, close opportunity gaps and improve college and career readiness
Schools across the district have integrated the Yale University created RULER approach to developing emotional intelligence. Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotion
Through professional development and credential enhancements, our high school teachers are teaching some of the most advanced high school courses in the state. SPS students have the opportunity to dually enroll in college while still in high school. Our senior internship program offers the opportunity to leave the classroom and continue learning in the workplace. Our soon-to-be-launched Career Pathways program will ensure our students master the skills employers seek while exposing students to a broad variety of industries and opportunities
SPS continues to maximize new opportunities presented by emerging technology, most recently offering blended learning options through programs like Edgenuity

Over the past five years, SPS has maximized our engagement opportunities by expanding the way we connect with and maintain relationships with our students, families and neighbors.

Implemented Parent Pop-up Webinars
Expanded the use of real-time translation for virtual meetings and events
Adopted REMIND App
Expanded staff to include English Language ambassadors
Undertook a complete redesign of all websites (Launched July 2022)

Improved Systems Support

Over the past five years, SPS has committed significant resources to upgrading our technology and expanding our programs and systems to support student learning, as well as continuing to address the outside factors that affect student achievement, including social emotional health, food insecurities and chronic absenteeism.

In 2020, SPS adopted a 1:1 commitment to technology and integrated the Google Classroom suite district-wide
Collaborated with Stamford Cradle to Career and community organizations like SPEF, to implement Bridge to College and other student support programs
Partner with the city in our long term facilities plan
