Rogers International School (RIS) is one of Stamford's 13 elementary schools. RIS is a Kindergarten through Grade 8 interdistrict magnet school with approximately 800 students. RIS is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the IB Primary Years Program and the IB Middle Years Program, which both focus on an inquiry based method of learning. The IB environment is used as an integrating context for learning across all subject areas and students engage in inquiry-based units focusing on building global awareness and the application of scientific skills in all subject areas.
The IB Primary Years Program is designed to foster the development of the whole child, encompassing social, physical, emotional, cultural and educational needs of students in an academic setting. The IB Middle Years Program helps students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills to actively and responsibly participate in an ever-changing world. As part of the IB philosophy, students in K-8 take Mandarin or Spanish. In addition and in support of the IB programs, RIS is a Haskins Mastery Reading lab school, which is a program dedicated to helping teachers learn effective, research-based methods of reading instruction.
RIS’s building has a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating. The state-funded facility includes a green roof, ice storage for the HVAC system, a rain garden, a wind turbine for power development, and water saving technologies.
