Superintendent Stamford Public Schools (SPS) Earl Kim and the Stamford Board of Education (BOE) named Sid Watson Assistant Principal Rippowam Middle School and Dr. Shawn Marinello Assistant Principal Toquam Magnet Elementary School on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the regular BOE meeting. Both positions are effective July 1, 2017.
Watson is replacing Michael Rinaldi, who was recently named principal at Westhill High School. For the past year, Watson has been an instructional math coach at Rippowam Middle School, supporting teachers with best practices on the teaching and learning of mathematics.
“I have enjoyed working at Rippowam for the past year and am very excited to continue my career there as assistant principal,” said Watson. “I especially look forward to helping our students understand that they have control over developing the best version of themselves through the integration of IB principles.”
Watson began his career in education in 2006 as a mathematics teacher for Norfolk Public Schools. In 2010, he became a mathematics teacher at Stamford High School. He later served as curriculum associate for Secondary Mathematics. Watson holds a B.S., Mathematics, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va., and a M.Ed., Educational Leadership, Regent University, Virginia Beach, Va.
“Mr. Watson emerged from a very impressive and robust administrator candidate pool of more than 90 applicants,” said Assistant Superintendent--Secondary Dr. Michael Fernandes. “He not only brings strong leadership experience from his current and previous roles in our district but also possesses a deep passion and commitment for education and the students he serves here.”
Marinello is replacing Angela Asaro, who was recently named principal at Stillmeadow Elementary School. He has served as Administrative Intern at Toquam for the past three years, supporting the school’s administration in day-to-day responsibilities as well as working directly with teachers to implement best teaching practices.
“Over the past three years Toquam has become a second home to me,” said Marinello. “I am truly honored to be named as the new assistant principal. I look forward to continuing to work with such dedicated and caring educators, parents and students”.
Prior to serving as administrative intern at Toquam, Marinello was a guidance counselor at Turn of River Middle School. He started his education career in Tampa, Fla., as a third grade teacher. He also held roles of afterschool director, magnet curriculum integration teacher and guidance counselor there. Marinello holds a B.S., Elementary Education, University of Tampa; a M.A., Educational Counseling, University of South Florida, Tampa; and an Ed.D., Educational Leadership, Urban Education, NOVA Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale.
“Given his commitment to and experience with the staff and families at Toquam, Shawn is an ideal fit to serve as the school’s assistant principal,” said Assistant Superintendent-Elementary Dr. Tamu Lucero. “Shawn’s background as a teacher and guidance counselor will continue to add value to the Toquam community.”
