Cloonan Middle School is one of five middle schools in Stamford and has approximately 550 students. The students are drawn from economically and ethnically diverse communities, which provides a unique and enriching environment for students to learn both what distinguishes individuals and what makes them the same. Cloonan’s mission is to create a safe and nurturing environment of learning excellence for early adolescents. All stakeholders work as partners to equip students with the knowledge, skills, character, compassion, confidence and desire to build successful lives and communities.
Cloonan has been recognized by College For Every Student (CFES) as a “School of Distinction” for its programs to promote student mentoring, community service, and college-path emphasis. Cloonan is the only school in the country to receive this recognition five years consecutively.
Cloonan has developed a School Improvement Plan focused on the areas of literacy, math, science and school culture. The School Data Team works with departmental and grade level Professional Learning Communities to monitor instruction and student achievement. Cloonan also has experienced teachers to serve on other committees such as the Safety, Communication and Technology Committee. Focus Walks, mini-observations and benchmark assessments are also employed to monitor teaching strategies and provide feedback on the effectiveness of teacher’s instruction.
Cloonan offers numerous after school clubs, intramural competition in eight sports, and participates in the Special Olympics. Cloonan has an exceptional Special Education program, including two Special Education teachers for each grade level team, who teach an Intensive Resource class. Cloonan participates in many community service projects, and their student-designed anti-bullying program has become a model adopted across the country by CFES.
